In February, Austin celebrated its seven-year anniversary of being America’s largest no kill city, saving more than 90 percent of its homeless animals since 2011.  This amazing accomplishment is in large part thanks to the amazing Austin animal shelters which have made Austin one of the safest U.S. cities for dogs, cats, and other animals.  If you are looking to adopt your next fur baby, here are the top 5 animal shelters in Austin:

1.  Austin Pets Alive!

Austin Pets Alive! Started adopting pets in June 2008, and has saved over 18,000 dogs and cats who were scheduled to be killed at the city shelter. APA operates as a nonprofit and much of the support for the shelter comes from charitable donations. The shelter is located on West Cesar Chavez, near the Lady Bird Lake hike and bike trail.  This West Austin location is ideal for taking your new best friend for a walk along the trail.  APA has programs that allow you to interact with adoptable dog; there is the ‘Jog-a-dog’ program, in which volunteers can take dogs on the trail every day of the week from noon-7pm.  Another active program to get involved with is RuffTail Runners group, by which volunteer take dogs for a run along the trail.  Join the meetup group and get running with your new best friend!

Blue Dog Rescue is an all-volunteer, charitable organization that works to find permanent homes for at-risk homeless dogs in the Central Texas area.  These dogs come from Central Texas shelters where they might not have a chance at adoption due to size, color breed or medical condition.  There is not an actual shelter because BDR is a network of foster families, but You can view adoptable dogs at BDR’s website.  If you would like to volunteer and become a foster family BDR is always in need of short and long-term foster homes.  Visit the website to volunteer and apply to become a foster family.
